The Department of English is an internationally recognized home for a diverse set of research and teaching interests within the language arts. Several degree programs offer both graduate and undergraduate students broad opportunities for research and study in such fields as creative writing, linguistics, literature, and communication and rhetoric. Faculty within all programs are firmly committed to classroom teaching while conducting individual and collaborative research to advance knowledge within their fields.
Part of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, the department is also dedicated to uses of technology, offering several courses in digital composition and design and helping to support ten computerized classrooms on campus. The program has also been a formative partner in curricular innovations such as ISU Learning Communities and ISUComm, a new campus-wide initiative emphasizing written, oral, visual, and electronic communication across all four years of the undergraduate experience. Nationally-recognized academic journals and scholarly websites are also based within the department.
