Graduate Study in M.A. in English: Creative Writing
A brief overview of ISU's MA in English with a specialization in creative writing. (Program discontinued; no longer offered for admission effective August 2006)
M.A. in English - Specialization in Creative Writing (30 credits)
Core requirement = 3 credits
- English 550X - The Study of Craft: Poetry, Fiction, and Nonfiction (prerequisite for 553, 554, 555, 556, 557)
Workshop requirement = 9 credits
After taking English 550X, students must take a workshop each semester from the following:
- English 553 - Advanced Imaginative Writing: The Long Project
- English 554 - Advanced Imaginative Writing: Fiction
- English 555 - Advanced Imaginative Writing: Nonfiction
- English 556 - Advanced Imaginative Writing: Poetry
- English 557 - Studies in Creative Writing
Each of these courses may be repeated up to a maximum of 12 credits per course. Students in creative writing must take a minimum of 9 credits in one or in a combination of these courses.
Literature requirement: 6 credits
- Two literature courses.
Electives: 9 credits
Students may choose from English Department offerings in any of the graduate majors (Creative Writing, Literature, RCPC, TESL/Applied Linguistics).

Independent research
3 credits (only 3 credits may count towards the degree)
- English 699 - Thesis (English 599: Creative Component is not an option.
| NOTE: The Creative Writing Program of Study does not include a foreign language requirement. Students are advised that many Ph.D. and M.F.A. programs require proficiency in a foreign language. |
