Last month, dual-degree graduate student Adam Blake Wright (MFA Creative Writing and MS Sustainable Agriculture) was selected as one of two Julia Child Foundation Scholarship winners at the Eating Words conference in Iowa City. A panel of nationally recognized food writers and magazine editors honored Adam for his Edible: Iowa River Valley article, “Sharing the Harvest: A 20-Year Celebration of Iowa’s CSA Farmers.”
At the conference, workshops were held on the topics of sustainability, food policy, memoir writing, and social media. Panelists were drawn from Edible Communities, a network of more than 80 North American publications whose mission “is to transform the way consumers shop for, cook, eat, and relate to local food.” In 2011, Edible Communities collectively won the James Bears Award for Publication of the Year.
Tracey Ryder, an Edible Communities co-founder, spoke on behalf of the Julia Child Foundation for Gastronomy and the Culinary Arts, which funded the scholarship. “The Foundation is very pleased to support the Edible Institute’s Food Writing Conference, Eating Words, as supporting emerging food writers is one of the Foundation’s key priorities. We offer our hearty congratulations to Adam Blake Wright for his winning submission.”
