Financial Support

Each year, we offer over $120,000 of funding in fellowships and scholarships for graduate students at the doctoral and master¹s levels. Over 70% of our graduate students hold graduate teaching and research assistantships in the English department.

The Presidential Scholars Program

The Presidential Scholars Program is an effort launched by ISU Present Steven Leath to recruit exceptional doctoral students in strategic program areas at Iowa State University.  The scholar program provides the recipient with a  stipend for the first two years in a doctoral program with the same benefits as other graduate assistants, including a full tuition scholarship credit towards full-time resident tuition and health insurance benefits.

The English Department received one of these scholarships from the Graduate College leadership for the 2014-15 and 2015-16 academic years (featured above).  The department has received additional scholar positions to award for the 2016-17 academic year.

Assistantship support provides five years of funding for PhD students entering with an MA, three years for MFA students, and two years for MA students. Graduate students may also have assistantships in other academic and administrative areas on campus. Graduate assistants gain valuable experience teaching their own independent sections in our innovative, multi-modal ISUComm program, English as a second language programs, and the Speech Communication program. Teaching Assistants are aided by formal mentoring, a weeklong orientation, and a proseminar devoted to pedagogical techniques and theory.

There are several types of awards available for graduate students in the English Department.  The department accepts applications for awards and scholarships offered annually in the spring and nominates students for Graduate College awards in order to recognize outstanding writing, research, and teaching.

Fellowships and Scholarships

The department has several resources available through which to offer fellowships and scholarships to qualifying new students admitted to our graduate programs.
