About My Teaching

As a language teacher, I cannot actually “teach” another person a language.  Instead, I serve as a guide to those learning the language, and as such provide information about the language, strategies for learning, feedback and encouragement.  I help my students become independent learners and, ultimately, proficient in studying in and using English.

How I came to Teach what I Teach

As an undergraduate, I studied French, Italian, German and Spanish, but I did want to major in any of these because I was interested in speaking the language, not studying literature.  When I discovered Linguistics and took a fabulous introductory course, I knew that was what I wanted to study.  Later I traded teaching assistantships with a friend and began to teach ESL.  I loved it and went on to teach English language in Ghana (Peace Corps Volunteer) and France.  Since I have been at ISU, I have also worked in Italy, Russia and Sudan.
